のどかなアステン・サスは、保護された景観であり、立ち寄るのに最適な場所です。せせらぎの水、歴史的な船、本格的な「サスハウス」、そしてフランドルで最後の数少ない手動操作の跳ね橋の一つが、ここに特別な雰囲気のある風景を作り出しています。 この水門は、1860年にレイエ川の大きな迂回を避けるために作られました。かつて貨物船は、アステンとバフテの間にある曲がりくねった蛇行を通過するのに最大8時間かかっていました。わずか300メートルの新しくまっすぐな掘削がそれを変えました。 特徴的な緑色の鉄製の跳ね橋は1896年に建てられ、航行シーズン中は今でも手動で操作されています。ボートが近づくと、純粋な筋力で橋が上がるまで少し待つ必要があります。生きている遺産の美しい一部です！ 文学愛好家も満足できるでしょう。白い漆喰で塗られた水門管理人の家には、今日、「't Oud Sashuis」という居心地の良い茶色のカフェがあります。また、ヒューゴ・クラウスの母親の生家でもあり、彼は子供時代の一部をここで過ごしました。 水、遺産、物語が集まる場所 – サイクリングやハイキングの途中で短い休憩に最適です。

To my knowledge, it's the only bridge where you don't swear, but are actually grateful that you have to wait because a boat needs to go through the lock. The manual lifting, the whole lock process, and the cheerful note from the lock keeper who politely thanks those waiting afterward... it's quite an experience.

Only a very short distance leads to the shore. Things used to be different: until about ten years ago, people were still swimming freely here (even after it was actually banned). There was even a long rope hanging from one of the trees, from which people swung into the water. Now, almost the entire shore is private property... but that doesn't stop you from enjoying the view to the fullest. Maaigemdijk was always one of my favorite spots (and I certainly wasn't the only one who loved it... and still do).

The lock dates from 1861 when a 100m passage was dug to save about 5 km of bends in the Leie. At the lock itself, which is still operated by hand, there are two lock master houses in a unique setting, dating from the 1860s.

The last baroness (also mayor of Poeke, which at the time was still a separate municipality), Ines Pycke de Peteghem, bequeathed the castle in her will to the National Work of Catholic School Colonies (NWKS). After her death in 1955, the castle served for a long time as a holiday camp for young children from (often rather vulnerable) families of workers and small business owners (NWKS later became "Duinen-Heide"). Later, the local playground found a home here. The castle also served as a venue for classical concerts, among other events. I remember an "Interludium" (a short segment produced by the then BRT to fill the gaps between programs) being recorded here. Poetry evenings (under the banner: "The Closer the Better") featuring artists such as Simon Vinkenoog and Ivo Van Strijtem were also held here. And now in 2025 the castle expects the 22nd edition of the East Flanders Biennale of Contemporary Art.
