330 hectares of nature reserve, a place almost uninhabited by humans, where the animals rule. The Val Cavanata Nature Reserve is a bird oasis located in the eastern area of the Grado Lagoon. Its symbol is the gray goose (Anser anser), which has been breeding here regularly since 1987. The extensive fish breeding area includes brackish water ponds, tidal creeks, the deep Averto channel and some barene (flat hills typical of the lagoon and regularly flooded) with a very varied vegetation. It has been declared a Wetland of International Value due to the over 260 species of birds (including 216 species of migratory birds and 21 species of birds of prey) that nest here. It is an ideal place for birdwatching enthusiasts. Among the mammals that can be found are deer, brown hares, skunks, stone martens, weasels, foxes, badgers, squirrels and hedgehogs. The Val Cavanata has the following structures for visitors: the Visitor Center (on the road that leads from Grado to Fossalon), the Didactic Laboratory of Casa Spina and some observation posts along the paths. Binoculars can be borrowed free of charge from the visitor center to observe the bird species. Guided tours can be organized upon prior booking.
