The church was originally built as a fortified church by farmers from Meesig after the Thirty Years' War. It was first documented in 1255 and originally belonged to the Verchen Monastery before being reintegrated into the Verchen parish.

It was built in the 17th century, probably on the site of an earlier building, from fieldstone mixed with brick and with an eastern half-timbered gable on an approximately square ground plan.

When we think of Caspar David Friedrich, we first think of cityscapes of Greifswald, Neubrandenburg, or Dresden. Yet it was the small village of Breesen near Neubrandenburg that the painter left behind a whole collection of drawings, where he even stayed for months. His favorite sister and mother-surrogate, Catharina, was married to Pastor August Sponholz in Breesen. Subjects included villagers, landscapes, tools, the rectory, and the church. The most famous Breesen motif is the 1822 painting "Village Landscape by Morning Light."
