In the middle of the Modica countryside

Beautiful place both for the view and for the paths immersed in the greenery. I recommend following the trail of the Gria stream.

The little church of San Bartolomeo stands alone on the hill in front of the Mocarda neighborhood and is easily accessible both from the road that leads from Via Risorgimento to Ibla, and through a good staircase that starts from the neighborhood below. It was built at the beginning of the 17th century and is mentioned for the first time in the pastoral visit of Monsignor Platamone in 1642. Tradition, but only tradition, says that it arose on the site of the pagan temple dedicated to Hercules Melkarte from which the neighborhood below, Mocarda, took its name through corruption. A cave below the church (used for a certain time as a stable) could instead connect it to a hermitage that later evolved into a little church. The little church has a simple structure, a single room and a small chapel on the right dedicated to Santa Marta, of whom there was a statue. Again from the chronicles we learn of the existence of a statue of the same Saint Bartholomew placed on the high altar and of a small painting of the Madonna della Catena. The remains of the altars remain. It has a small bell tower dated 1696 in which there is a small bell and from this we deduce that it had not completely collapsed with the earthquake of 1693 so much so that it was rebuilt in a short time. Assumed to the municipal heritage, it was recently restored.
