The Leopoldine columns are a series of stone memorials surmounted by a cast iron sphere. They dot the Tuscan territory and were commissioned by Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine in 1839. They had the purpose of indicating the royal roads of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, i.e. the main communication routes that connected Florence with other cities and smaller centres.
