The Sword of Cosimo refers to Cosimo Serristori (1646-1713), a nobleman who lived in the castle of Vitiano. The first place, the Sword of Cosimo, can be reached by turning at the height of the parish church of San Martino, along the Sr71, in the direction of Fondaccio. After two kilometers, the car must be left in the locality of La Pila to continue half a kilometer on foot in the direction of the Tower, or what remains of the ancient castle of Vitiano documented since 1098. -- The Sword of Cosimo and the Trace of Saint Francis

On the southern borders of the municipal territory of Arezzo, in a splendid panoramic position on a spur overlooking the Val di Chiana, the Vitiano Castle, better known as La Torre, still exudes great charm. Built between the end of the 10th century and the 11th century and mentioned for the first time in 1098 as part of a will, the castle was part of the vast possessions of the Marchiones held through their vassals, who here took the name Da Vitiano and they subsequently became the actual owners. In June 1153 the Arezzo militias besieged the manor, forcing the owners to sign the transfer of ownership to the Municipality and the Parish Church of Arezzo. The deed was signed on June 28 of that year. In exchange for the transfer, the ancient owners regained the fortress and its court as a fief, but they had to respect the pacts of submission and loyalty. Subsequently, the Da Vitianos moved or were forced to move to the city, to the Porta Sant'Andrea neighborhood. From some branches of the family the Perini, the Marcelli and the Dragomanni were born. The Perini also gave their name to one of the most characteristic "canti" of Arezzo, the one near Giorgio Vasari's birthplace in today's via Mazzini. According to Ubaldo Pasqui the "Annales Arretinorum Maiores" - fundamental sources for reconstructing the history of Arezzo – were written by Ser Francesco, son of Ser Astoldo di Baldinuccio Da Vitiano, one of the most famous Arezzo notaries of the early fourteenth century.

A large rock with a sword stuck in it, renamed "Cosimo's Sword" in relation to Cosimo Serristori, a patrician of Florentine origin born around 1646, who lived for a long time in the former Vitiano fortress converted into a palace. The artefact refers to other legendary swords in rock, such as that of the "Arthurian cycle" and that linked to the life of San Galgano. In the first case we refer to the saga of King Arthur, which in turn refers to the legends of the British Isles set in the 5th/6th century. In the second case we talk about the life of a 12th century Sienese knight with a dissolute youth, who after his religious conversion planted his weapon in a boulder, never to use it again and became a hermit. Even today, in the chapel of San Galgano in Montesiepi di Chiusdino, it is possible to see the embedded sword. Cosimo Serristori lived a restless and vicious youth, full of continuous excesses. Various stories were born around his figure, some even macabre, handed down from generation to generation. Even today the elders speak of a trap in the castle with which the nobleman made those he disliked fall into a well equipped with sharp blades. Cosimo was a skilled swordsman, but in his old age a mystical crisis brought him closer to the Philippian Fathers who at that time were settled a few kilometers from home, in Castiglion Fiorentino. He took his vows and in 1713 he drew up a will with which he left all his assets to the congregation. Precisely in the area where Serristori matured the change that transformed him from a reckless man into a benefactor, the weapon was placed thanks to an idea by Massimo Romboli, always most appreciated by lovers of outdoor walks, who with curiosity climb above Vitiano to admire it up close. The artefact becomes a message of peace in a world tormented by wars and an invitation to abandon violence to embrace solidarity towards others.

Traccia" di San Francesco or Traccia del Cavallo 'a perennial spring, which according to tradition handed down locally for more than six centuries, was made to flow by the Saint of Assisi to drink while he was walking along the path. After Francis had prayed to the Lord, his donkey nudged the rock and pawed the ground, thus making the spring gush. A similar miracle, narrated by Tommaso da Celano in his "Life of Saint Francis", was painted by Giotto in the Basilica of Assisi.
