It was built in the 1970s and opened in 1979 as a base for summer skiing on the Scerscen glacier. Unfortunately, the refuge had a very short life: the progressive retreat of the glacier and economic difficulties made its management unsustainable. The facility was closed permanently in 1992 and has remained abandoned ever since. For those climbing, remember that reaching it is a "high mountain" route, so even if the trail is not difficult, it is not trivial and should not be underestimated.

Located at 2,450 m above sea level, on a spectacular natural balcony overlooking the upper Valmalenco, with a direct view of Monte Disgrazia, the Italian-Swiss ridge, and many high peaks of the Rhaetian Alps. Reaching the refuge is a hike of medium difficulty: from the village of Chiareggio, it takes about 2.5 hours to climb (850 m of elevation gain), while from San Giuseppe it is slightly longer but with gentler gradients. The trail is well marked and offers increasingly expansive views as you ascend. Excellent cuisine featuring typical Valtellina dishes.

Alpe Musella is a charming mountain pasture nestled in the pastures, with mountain huts and the Musella and Cesare Mitta refuges. At the huts, there's also a fountain with a stone table, an ideal place for a break. From here, you can choose to ascend towards Carate or descend directly to the parking lot, completing the loop of the hike. Alternatively, you can take the trail that follows the Scerscen stream, passing moraines, bridges, and scree slopes.

Good starting point to reach Monte Disgrazia.

Refuge stop on the Sentiero Roma or reachable from the Preda Rossa plain (toll road). Excellent location both for the view and for the streets that start from here

The Rifugio Longoni is highly recommended. Good food, cozy and a nice host family.
