The little church of San Gallo stands out with its bell tower just outside the town of Bormio. The date of construction is uncertain, some scholars attribute it to the early Middle Ages. The saint, little known in Italy, lived in the sixth century and is always portrayed with a bear. This is because, according to legend, San Gallo, having just decided to live as a hermit, met the wounded animal and cared for it.
