A celebration of the written word: The "German Diary Archive" in Emmendingen collects German-language diaries, memoirs, and correspondence from all walks of life – a unique collection in Germany. The oldest diary dates back to 1760. From the collection of more than 28,000 documents, 26 selected items are presented in rotating exhibitions at the small museum: diaries designed by graphic artists, painters, and calligraphers; travel journals from two centuries; childhood diaries; the life's work of authors whose writing accompanied them throughout their lives; records kept by parents documenting their children's development; and curiosities such as a miniature diary entitled "The Moor Oasis." The museum is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours of the "Diary Archive" are available by appointment. www.tagebucharchiv.de

The Niederemmendingen town gate is the only remaining one of four Baroque gates that were originally built in the early 18th century as part of the town's fortifications. In 1706, it received a distinctive turret, and in 1929 a second gateway was added – to this day, it dominates the entrance to Karl-Friedrich-Straße. Remnants of the old town wall are visible nearby, including at Hebelstraße and Goethepark.
