7月 1, 2025, NCN 45 Disused Railway Path
Flat, hard packed gravel road that used to be a railway. Gravel bikes or mountain bikes will suit. Nice run along the Severn. Free Parking available at the Bridgnorth end then it’s a nice spin up to Ironbridge.

6月 14, 2024, The Iron Bridge (Ironbridge Gorge)
"In order to be able to transport his goods, the ironworks owner Abraham Darby III was looking for an architect who could build him a stable bridge made of "stone, brick or wood" across the five-kilometer-wide valley of the Severn in central England. Thomas Pritchard accepted the challenge, but he built a bridge made of cast iron, the completion of which in 1781 marked the beginning of the new "Iron Age". It was the largest free-floating bridge construction of the time. Built at the highest point of the valley, the Iron Bridge became a symbol of the industrial power of the Darbys and a monument to the Industrial Revolution." With these words, the website for the television series "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity" presents its film contribution (in German) about the UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Site "Iron Bridge": https://www.ardmediathek.de/video/schaetze-der-welt/ironbridge-grossbrittanien-folge-156/3sat/Y3JpZDovL3N3ci5kZS83MTUyMDA4

Completed in 1818, Coalport Bridge is a historic single-arch cast iron bridge that spans the River Severn in the Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire. The bridge embodies the rich industrial heritage of the region and, in contrast to the more famous Iron Bridge located two miles upstream, it still carries vehicular traffic. Traffic crosses the bridge one way at a time and is subject to a height limit of 6 ft 6 in. Coalport Bridge is arguably more impressive to view than the Iron Bridge because of its lean and streamlined design. The bridge is best-viewed from either upstream of downstream as crossing the bridge will not display all of its merits.

10月 22, 2023, Bridgnorth Bridge
Bridgnorth is beautifully perched atop a sandstone cliff with spectacular views of the Severn Valley. Being divided by the river gives off the impression of it being two towns really, a high town and a low town. It's a pretty place and has an interesting history going back to the English civil war and some more. Well worth a visit.

Labelled, rightly or wrongly, as the "Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution" Ironbridge and its ‘Iron bridge’ is a stunning little county town with a cute high Street, lovely shops, pubs and cafes, a sprinkling of good museums and of course the bridge itself. The latter being the first fabricated from cast iron. It’s a grand beautiful architectural statement from bygone days and well worth a visit!

12月 31, 2022, The Iron Bridge (Ironbridge Gorge)
The iron bridge that spans the River Severn near to the Shropshire village of Coalbrookdale was the first of its kind anywhere in the world when it was constructed in 1779. This pioneering use of cast iron was afterwards adopted widely in the construction of bridges, aqueducts and other structures. The bridge's fame became so great that it gave its name to the spectacular wooded gorge which surrounds it, now the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. In 2017-18 English Heritage undertook a £3.6m conservation project on the Iron Bridge to protect the future of this historic example of British ironwork.

12月 31, 2022, The Wrekin Summit
Rising to 407 metres, The Wrekin is a prominent landmark, its visibility from the M54 signalling the entrance to Shropshire. Unlike some of the local hills, The Wrekin was never a volcano in its own right, despite its conical shape, but is composed of various igneous rocks and volcanic processes. The ridgeline either side of The Wrekin makes for some great running, with fabulous views in every direction.

11月 23, 2022, The Wrekin Hillfort
When I was at University in Brum in my first year I stayed with a lovely couple in Ward End. They used the local expression "all round the Wrekin". It was used to describe someone explaining something in a convoluted or complex way. Since then, I have had a fascination with the place and wanted to visit. Anyway, that was in the early 1970s - I finally got there in 2021 - better late than never!

Cast iron bridge that crosses the river Severn in the small town of Ironbridge. As the first of its kind it inspired the widespread use of iron as a bridge construction material.

Spanning the Severn between Coalport and Preens Eddy, today's Coalport Bridge is an impressive, decorative cast iron structure. But back in the 1700s it was a double-arched wooden bridge, known imaginatively as Wood Bridge to differentiate it from the nearby iron bridge, known as Iron Bridge. Unfortunately, less than five years after its construction, Wood Bridge was washed away by floods. Over the following years it was replaced with various iron/wood structures, none of which lasted for long, until eventually a sturdier all-iron bridge was built in 1818. This stood for 187 years until requiring strengthening work in the early 2000s.

9月 11, 2022, Bridgnorth Bridge
There has probably been a Bridgnorth Bridge over the Severn as early as Ethelfledas time, the lady of Mercia and King Alfred’s daughter. Any bridge in existence in 1101 would have been destroyed to hinder the Kings movements. A bridge was recorded in 1272 when a man was forced to defend himself against a Broseley neighbour and was killed on Bridgnorth Bridge. A 1313 map shows the bridge to be built of stone. Tolls for the repair of the bridge were brought into force in 1331 (A method of covering the repair cost of the bridge brought into effect many times over the years.) On the East side of the bridge on the second pier was a protective gatehouse, the gatehouse was removed in 1801 by which time it was recorded as having been used as prison. Many houses were built on the bridge including a toll collectors cottage on the East side, that was removed in 1912. On the south side of the bridge was the chapel of St Syth which was built between 1102 and 1108. The chapel came to an end with the dissolution of the friars in 1538. The chapel probably had many other uses after the dissolution, it is known to have been a meeting place for the baptists in 1699. After much damage to the bridge by floods and alike over the years the bridge was rebuilt and repaired in 1812 by Thomas Simpson to the design and specification of Thomas Telford. Most of the buildings on the bridge were completely removed when the bridge was widened in 1823- 1824. In 1868 the bridge clock was illuminated and replaced with the current clock in1876.
