In pre-Roman times, the Muzza was a natural branch of the Adda, which began in Cassano d'Adda in the Groppello d'Adda area and gradually dispersed its waters in the plain, until it ran out near Paullo, although according to some the waters reached the current Melegnano, flowing into the Lambro (Addetta); the irregularity and slow flow of the watercourse made the area more similar to a swamp than to a plain with a river, which confused its bodies of water with those of the ancient Gerundo lake.
