The monumental work, dedicated to the "Hero of Two Worlds," Giuseppe Garibaldi (Nice 1807 - Caprera 1882), was created in marble in 1906 by the master sculptors Repetto of Lavagna, based on a design by the Lombard sculptor Odoardo Tabacchi (Valganna 1831 - Milan 1905). The monument depicts the leader on a rock, his face turned toward the sea and his right index finger extended to indicate the direction Garibaldi's followers should follow. His left hand holds a sword. The rock symbolizes the rock of Quarto (Genoa), from which the Expedition of the Thousand set out for Sicily in 1860 to overthrow the Bourbon government. The monument is located in the historic Ghiaia neighborhood, which is deeply rooted in its traditions; the most famous is the Spring Festival, which consists of the lighting of a bonfire and the free distribution of fritters. The statue is a marble sculpture dating back to the early 20th century, created by Pietro Capurro (Novi Ligure, 1856) on the specific orders of the then mayor of Santa Margherita, Angelo Rainusso, who wanted it in Piazza Mazzini.
