Built by order of Niccolò d'Este in 1435, it was the first of the famous Este residences to be built from the walls of Ferrara and always remained the richest and most sumptuous. The Este lords wanted to create a series of sumptuous residences that were later called "Delights", the most sumptuous of all was Belriguardo which also served as a summer palace. Dozens of halls frescoed by the greatest artists of the various eras and incredibly huge gardens characterized this oasis of beauty. The Sala della Vigna is the precious and only element that survived the devastating fury that pervaded all those who used Belriguardo for four centuries, since the Este family, in 1598, was forced to abandon the Ferrarese fiefdom to return it to the Pope, retiring to Modena and Reggio, fiefdoms that the Este lords had instead obtained from the Emperor. The large rooms of the palace were transformed into stables and granaries and the elegant columns of the loggias became monumental and square pillars for rustic shelters. Belriguardo has survived to this day despite progressive collapses, adaptations, demolitions and its division into numerous private homes. The remains of the ancient delight still visible today are the tower in the center, from which the Este family observed the shows in the fish pond below fed by water from the Sandalo river, the six Gothic windows from the end of the fifteenth century and the Sala della Vigna, the only room that has returned some evidence of its ancient splendor. The building is home to the Belriguardo Civic Museum which exhibits archaeological finds from the area and also dedicates sections to Renaissance and modern art. Opening hours (to be checked before planning the visit) From Thursday to Sunday from 9.30 to 12.00 and from 15.30 to 19.00. Closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Vineyard Hall can be visited during the opening hours of the Archaeological Museum.

Excellent pastry shop with a very well-stocked counter from the opening at 6:30 in the morning. For us ARIETI Ferrara and #quellidelle530, it is a perfect refreshment point, for a mid-tour breakfast or a good reason to take a detour.

History The bulwark of the Mountain, with that of San Tommaso, was built in the early sixteenth century using the earth obtained after the excavation of the outer moat of the walls for the erection of the Montagnone area. The Montagnone, also called the Mountain of San Giorgio, in particular in the period of the duchy of Alfonso I d'Este was used as a military observation point and, mainly, as a privileged location for the powerful artillery of the Este seignory. The triangle of the bulwark, which once housed gardens, was abandoned in later times to decay and the uncontrolled growth of vegetation. Only in the course of the twentieth century did it proceed, in different periods, to its recovery and enhancement.
