The Vorderer and Hinterer Lake Constance are one of the few remaining witnesses to the last Ice Age. Both lake basins were traversed by a glacier, which left a ground moraine on the lake floor. Halfway towards Nassfeld, a plateau known as the Pfaffenschwand stretches east of the Nassfeld federal highway, on which two lakes lie one behind the other: the Große (Vorderer) and the Kleine (Hinterer) Bodensee.
