The largest square open to the sea in Europe

Piazza Unità d'Italia in Trieste is one of the largest squares in Europe. It is considered the beating heart of the city and is surrounded by splendid historic buildings, including the Town Hall, the Government Palace and the Lloyd Triestino building. On the opposite side the square offers a spectacular view of the Adriatic Sea.

A fantastic cycle path for fans of former railway lines and tunnels. I drove down the path. At the beginning light gravel mixed with coarse karst rock, from the entrance to Trieste city asphalt with markings like on a cyclist's highway. The tunnels are sensationally preserved, the view of Istria, the vastness of the sea and Trieste delights several times during the journey, as do the numerous railway relics. In some cases you drive along the Italy-Slovenia border. Just cycle and enjoy.

The old railway line is a good way to travel from Trieste to Rijeka without too much traffic. The section in Slovenia is currently closed and the detour is annoying.

In summer the place can heat up quite a bit. but at the front corner of the Palazzo del Lloyd Triestino there is a fountain with snapdragons. You can cool down a bit there.
