Spectacular viewpoint of the coast.

The monumental work, dedicated to the "Hero of Two Worlds," Giuseppe Garibaldi (Nice 1807 - Caprera 1882), was created in marble in 1906 by the master sculptors Repetto of Lavagna, based on a design by the Lombard sculptor Odoardo Tabacchi (Valganna 1831 - Milan 1905). The monument depicts the leader on a rock, his face turned toward the sea and his right index finger extended to indicate the direction Garibaldi's followers should follow. His left hand holds a sword. The rock symbolizes the rock of Quarto (Genoa), from which the Expedition of the Thousand set out for Sicily in 1860 to overthrow the Bourbon government. The monument is located in the historic Ghiaia neighborhood, which is deeply rooted in its traditions; the most famous is the Spring Festival, which consists of the lighting of a bonfire and the free distribution of fritters. Going up the Aurelia from Riva Trigoso, when you reach the crossroads to go down to Moneglia, the view suddenly opens up over the bay of Moneglia, surrounded by the green of the woods and olive groves that surround it.

In this stretch the Aurelia gradually climbs with an average gradient of 5%-6%. Every now and then, some very suggestive views open up over the Gulf of Tigullio, with the promontory of Portofino as a backdrop.

When the waves are tall it is nice to stop the ride for a minute, have a slice of focaccia or an ice-cream and watch the surfers on Recco beach!
