After Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, Lake Dojran is the smallest of the three large lakes in North Macedonia. The border between the Balkans and Greece runs right in the middle. Because excessive extraction for agriculture caused the water level to drop by 5 meters, measures were taken in 2002 by the two neighboring countries to protect this lake.

On opposite hills from the Saint Atanasius church, the small chapel overlooks the small town of Udovo. A steep set of stairs lead up to the chapel from here, while a road climbs more gently up from the back side a few hundred yards to the east.
