Magic nightride! Thnx for sharing this route. I started this ride anti clockwise 20.30hr in late June. Next to the great views over the lake at sunset it started to get dark when passing Liciano Niccone (So bring some good light with you) From there the last climb trough the forrest was pure magical. At both sides of the road the forest was full of fireflies. Quit some stunning experience!

Battaglia del Trasimeno The Battle of Trasimeno It was June 24, 217 BC, when the Roman army of consul Gaius Flaminius Nepos was trapped in a plain between the lake and the hills, surrounded by the army of the Carthaginian general Hannibal. The battle is one of the most important and dramatic clashes during the Second Punic War, fought in the third century BC between Rome and Carthage for supremacy over the Mediterranean. It is said that more than 15,000 Roman soldiers died there, their bodies burned in pits called ustrina. This is evidenced by the numerous artifacts found: coins, weapons, etc. In 1996, the municipality founded the "Permanent Documentation Center on the Battle of Trasimeno" in the immediate vicinity of the historic center. A series of panels depicts the entire Second Punic War and the battle itself, based on descriptions by Polybius and Livy. Despite its name "the Great", Isola Maggiore is the second largest island of Lake Trasimeno, but the only one that hosts a small village near the port that is still inhabited. Completely covered by thick vegetation of olive, holm oak and cypress trees, it is a treasure trove of artistic and religious works that testify to its ancient history. The village consists of a cobbled main street lined with old houses. Among them stands out the pretty 14th-century house of the Capitano del Popolo, which can now be visited via the Proloco. At the end of the village is the church of San Salvatore, built in the 12th century, which contains inside parts of a polyptych by Sano di Pietro from the church of the Franciscan convent. The most interesting point not to be missed is the 13th-century church of San Michele Arcangelo. It is located on the highest point of the island and offers a charming 360-degree panoramic view of the lake, especially beautiful at sunset.
