Gars am Kamp wird 1279 erstmals urkundlich als Markt erwähnt, 1403 wurde das Marktrecht bestätigt. Die Garser Burg wurde von den Kuenringern ausgebaut, spätere Burgherren waren unter anderem die Maissauer und die Reichsgrafen von Lamberg. Das im 16. Jahrhundert erbaute große Renaissanceschloss verfiel aufgrund der Dachsteuerbelastung im 19. Jahrhundert zu einer Burgruine.

Klosterplatz in Sitzendorf an der Schmida is a square that takes its name from the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent de Paul, located at the southwest entrance to the main square. The convent was founded in the 19th century and housed the Lower Austrian State Kindergarten until 1998. Klosterplatz is part of Sitzendorf's historic town center and is located in the immediate vicinity of the main square, which is characterized by 16th-century townhouses. The monastery itself is an important part of Sitzendorf's history and townscape. In addition to its historical significance, Klosterplatz is also a place that contributes to climate friendliness through its green spaces and permeable grass pavers. The unsealing of the square allows rainwater to seep into the ground, thus contributing to an improved quality of life.

The church is dedicated to Saint Valentine. Next to the church is a large, castle-like rectory, built between 1686 and 1687.
