The name evokes mythical dedications to the cult of Saturn in the Roman era, confirmed by the discovery in the area of burial grounds with cinerary urns. The Pieve is documented before the year 1000 and its position confirms the existence of an important road to guard, the Pistoia - Modena road of the Lombard era (750 AD) which connects it with the nearby castle of Batoni and with the other ancient Pieve di Lizzano in the direction of the Abbey of Nonantola. All this could give credit to the suggestive hypothesis that the lower part of the bell tower may have been a Lombard tower or lookout. The current church retains little of the ancient Romanesque style due to the stylistic changes made in the last centuries of its long history.
