The knightly family of the nobles of Odenthal appears in documents as early as the 12th century. They most likely lived in Strauweiler, so the castle complex can probably be dated to the second half of the 12th century. In 1650, Johann Adolf Freiherr Wolf, known as Metternich zur Gracht, married the last heiress of the castle, a certain Maria Catharina von Hall. Strauweiler then remained in the possession of the Wolf-Metternich family for over 350 years. In the 20th century, the property passed through marriage to Hubertus Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein, whose son is now lord of Strauweiler.
