No comments needed, it has to be done... It is worth it for what it represents and also because it is quiet, without traffic.

The Pian della Capanna refuge is open most of the year, especially from spring to autumn. It remains a point of reference for those who undertake the path of Saint Francis and for this purpose it offers a bivouac that is always open next to the structure.

Sacred place of San Francesco d'Assisi, silence and peace reign supreme, stupendous panorama. Absolutely worth seeing, you can get there by car but you can appreciate it much better by arriving there after a trek.

The hermitage of Cerbaiolo, located in the municipality of Pieve Santo Stefano, has a fascinating history that dates back several centuries. Here are some highlights from its story: 8th century: The first small monastery was built and was built by Tedaldo, lord of Tiferno (Città di Castello), as a gift to his daughter. The daughter's request was to build it on bare rock, "like Golgotha". 12th - 13th century: After a period of growth, the few remaining Benedictine monks abandoned Cerbaiolo to move to two other monasteries in the area, leaving the hermitage uninhabited. 17th century: A chapel in honor of San Antonio is built in the woods, where his hut is said to be. This gesture also served to preserve the memory of a previous small oratory. 18th century: The friars leave Cerbaiolo and move to Pieve Santo Stefano. The hermitage becomes the parish seat with the title of "S. Antonio da Padova" and is governed by a priest. Thus the small hamlet of the Municipality was born. 19th century: In 1867, the poet Giosuè Carducci was a guest in Cerbaiolo and portrayed his experience in the ode "To the friends of the Tiber Valley". 20th century: During the two wars, 39 people lived in Cerbaiolo, in addition to those who lived in the surrounding farmhouses.

The hermitage of Montecasale is one of the most important places linked to the life of Saint Francis. It was the Saint himself who founded the hermitage inside a pre-existing building donated to him by the bishop of Città di Castello. It is also said that the wooden statue of the Madonna with Child was brought by Francis himself, even if there is no certain evidence of this. Its current appearance dates back to the 16th century. Outside the convent are visible: the source of “Grappa l'Orso” where the three thieves drank; the fountain of San Francesco, according to some, created by himself; the Sasso Spicco, where it is said that Francis competed with a nightingale in singing the praises of God, and the little garden where, according to tradition, Francis tested the ability of obedience of two young men eager to become friars.

On the pilgrimage route lies the town of Monte Casale, a place full of memories of Saint Francis in the forests of Valtiberina. On the way over the Alpe della Luna, a small monastery was built by Camaldolese monks in 1192. The complex, set in the woods and between watercourses, included a hospital and a hospice whose mission was to accommodate hikers. The history of the hermitage of Montecasale took a new turn in 1213: it was donated to Saint Francis by the Bishop of Citta di Castello and became a place of utmost importance for Franciscan spirituality and tradition. The hermitage is now the result of a restoration in the Renaissance style. The complex still preserves the original layout, characteristic of the oldest Franciscan monasteries, with the series of small buildings related to the monastic functions. The oldest surviving work of art is a valuable multicolored wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child, rescued from the ruins of the nearby castle and brought here by Saint Francis. However, this is not the only trace that reminds us of the saint's presence in this place: the stone on which he slept, a crucifix, three small urns with some relics, two skulls of the three thieves he converted - the whole hermitage is rich in memories of Saint Francis.

Renamed "Passo Marco Pantani" in March 2023, the climb of Mount Carpegna was the Pirate's famous training ground. Pantani used to say, and it's a phrase you'll read many times on the asphalt: "Carpegna is enough for me." Going up from the town of the same name, you will encounter writings, statues and many other memories of Pantani. It is also a historic climb for the Giro d'Italia: in 1973 Eddy Merckx won here.

Immersed in the green of the woods, near streams and natural caves, the hermitage of Montecasale was founded in 1213 by Francesco who received it as a gift from the bishop of Città di Castello. The building, dating back to the 11th century, probably acquires its present appearance in 1500. The most ancient work of art is the very valuable sculpture of the Madonna and child that is wanted brought by the Poverello from the ruins of the nearby castle. But the whole hermitage is rich in Franciscan memories: the oratory with the stone that served as a bed for Francis; a crucifix carried by the Saint; three small urns containing some relics and two skulls of the three thieves whose conversion the biographer tells of. Outside the convent you can see the source of San Francesco, according to some made by himself; the source of “Grappa l'Orso” where the three thieves drink; the Sasso Spicco, where it is said that Francis competed with the nightingale in singing the praises of God, and the little garden where, according to tradition, Francis verifies the obedience capacity of two young men wishing to become friars. Once, two young people came to Blessed Francis, begging him to be received into the Order. Blessed Francis, wanting to prove whether they were truly obedient and prepared to deny their will, led them into the garden saying: “Come, let's plant cabbages; and as you see me doing, so in that way you plant too ”. While the blessed Francis, planting, put the roots upwards towards the sky, and the leaves under the ground, and one of them did everything like the blessed Francis, the other did not imitate him, but said: "Not so, Father, cabbages are planted, but the other way around ”. And blessed Francis replied: "Son, I want you to do as I do". But not wanting to do it, because it seemed wrong to him, Blessed Francis said to him: "Brother, I see that you are a great teacher, go your way, because you are not suitable for my Order". And accepted the first young man, rejected him. (Fra 'Bartolomeo da Pisa)
