Watchtower located on the steep road that goes from Sant’Ilario up towards Monte Perone.

The watchtower of San Giovanni is located on the slope of Monte Perone at a height of about 300 meters and dates back to the 12th-13th century

Imposante Burgruine

The Tower of San Giovanni is the only military testimony of the Middle Ages and has been the inspiration for many legends that have survived to this day. It is said that the tower was built as a prison for exiles. According to legend, the tower also served as a prison for Agrippina Postumio, third son of Agrippa and Giulia, daughter of Ottaviano and the famous philosopher Seneca. Another legend tells that the queen of the island of Elba was imprisoned there for life because she fell in love with a Saracen. No matter what you believe, the view from here alone is worth a visit.

The oldest sanctuary on the island of Elba, in a small plain at the foot of Monte Capanne, is the hermitage of San Cerbone.
