The current Basilica Sanctuary was built recently (1957-1979), but the history surrounding the cult is much older, dating back to the late eighth and early ninth centuries. A ship coming from the East, loaded with goods, including a statue of the Virgin Mary that had escaped iconoclastic persecution, was forced to dock by a violent storm. The sailors were forced to disembark, but the ship remained motionless. So the occupants decided to lighten the load, leaving the chest containing the statue of the Madonna Bruna on shore, among other items. The ship set sail again and continued its journey. A place so cute... Be careful a lot of Meduses in water

The Santuario Santa Maria de Tindari is the famous pilgrimage church with the Black Madonna. The church was built in the 1950s and here the Black Madonna is worshiped by Tindari. Tradition has it that after a sudden burst of images, the picture of grace from Constantinople was washed ashore in a box. The black Madonna can be seen in the back smaller church.

The lagoons are a beautiful nature reserve. The water is crystal clear and at the end of the headland a cache is hidden. This small headland is worth a little evening walk, a best at sunset. The beach is natural and on the sand is harder to walk.

From Oliveri there is a well-developed, but very steep path up to the monastery of the "Black Madonna" - an important Sicilian pilgrimage site. Behind it lies a large excavation site. Nice views over the coast!
