Tough road for a gravel bike

At Piano Provenzana the asphalt ends of what can be considered the north-east side of Etna, namely that of Linguaglossa. In winter it is a popular ski resort, while in summer it is possible to continue pedaling towards the mouths of the volcano thanks to a fat-wheeled bicycle. Bars, kiosks and other types of services such as rentals and guides are often open here.

The Rifugio Alpino Ragabo hotel is located on the Linguaglossa side of Etna. A very nice place, especially to refresh yourself after a long walk. Too bad about the excessive number of motorcyclists... including noise and exhaust fumes. https://www.ragabo.it/

The bivouac was inaugurated on 1 January 2024. Other interventions are currently under construction: the external fence and the fountain with the manual pump. The forestry team did an excellent job: the bivouac is not only new but has various elements that make it one of the most beautiful on Etna. - It is covered internally and externally with wood and this improves thermal insulation. - The excellent quality of the wooden window frames also makes it more comfortable - It is very panoramic: You can admire most of the villages under the northern slope of Etna - The two very comfortable wooden deckchairs are the best of this bivouac. Two pearls typical of the Alps but unprecedented on Etna: the forestry department really did an excellent job!

The refuge is located exactly at the entrance to the Altomontana track: 33 km route on dirt road around Etna which ends under the Sapienza refuge at 1700 m above sea level.
