The border between Germany (Bavaria) and Austria (Vorarlberg) runs partially along the Eyenbach. The Eyenbach is a left tributary of the Rotach and forms the border in one section.

According to an information board on site, it was formed around 20,000 years ago when meltwater cascaded from a great height into a hole in the rock, creating a whirlpool that set a stone in motion, grinding itself into the rock over many centuries. This "grinder" has not been preserved in Scheffau, however, as it was presumably removed from the glacial pothole along with other rock.
