Burgio, a Sicilian town with Arab roots and famous for its traditional ceramics, boasts a rich history, ceramic workers and unique artisan bell workshops in Sicily.

The Sosio River, the initial stretch of the Verdura River, flows in central-southern Sicily, crossing several municipalities. Its valley, rich in natural reserves and archaeological remains, is one of the least contaminated in Sicily.

At this point, a splendid view opens up on Monte Luceto, located near the Sosio River.

The path that leads to Pizzo Castellazzo (974 meters).

It is said that the wooden crucifix was carved in 1200 by a shepherd who used the wood of a tree. He managed to carve all of the Christ except the head. Legend has it that the already sculpted head was found by the shepherd at the foot of an oak called the "celsa di lu Signuri"; but the incredible thing is that that same oak, later, was struck by lightning and it remained a stumped trunk, in the shape of a cross.

Status May 2022. I can only confirm Anja's suggestion. The road to the Torre Salsa Reserve is in poor condition. Recommended only for cars with sufficient ground clearance; our Fiat 500 rental car lands. But you can also park directly at the intersection with the main road (see tour registration). There is now a gated house on the way. We used the garden gate as the property is not permanently inhabited. Maybe it's best to walk around generously. From the beach car park, the path is quite overgrown, but can still be found and passed. Stunning sea views. Almost no shadow all the way.

Dear hiking friends, unfortunately this fantastic tour is more or less completely in the private property of Agriturismo Torre Salsa. Access via the WWF site is not clearly delimited. Since the site is partially fenced, it is a "way of no return". We were informed of this by the owner near the beach and sent back. The tour should therefore definitely be removed !!
