Municipality in the Basento valley of around 12,000 inhabitants, Bernalda boasts a characteristic historic center which stands on a plateau sloping towards the sea. From here it is splendid to observe the Ionian Sea and the hamlet of Metaponto. Also of particular beauty are the church of San Bernardino and the castle of Bernalda, probably built by the Normans.

The only way to cross the river. The bridge is run-down but for bicycles no problem :) The path is a bit hidden and you'll have to push your bike for a few meters.

Cool spot, easy to miss. Look for a narrow and overgrown path.

Scanzano Jonico is located in a flat area along the Ionian coast less than 1 km from the sea in the south-western part of the region; the municipal area is at a height ranging from 0 to 106 m a.s.l., with an average of 21 m a.s.l.; however most of the municipal area, including the main town, is located a few meters above sea level. It borders to the north with the municipality of Pisticci (28 km), to the east with the Ionian Sea (1 km), to the south with the territories of Policoro (6 km) and Tursi (26 km) and to the west with the municipality of Montalbano Jonico (19 km). Arriving in Scanzano Jonico it is possible to visit, almost at the entrance to the town, the Baronial Palace with an adjoining chapel. It is a square-plan feudal building with an internal courtyard and a crenellated tower. Currently the structure houses some municipal offices and also cultural activities are carried out inside. The small chapel of the Théotokos (Mother of God) was recently reconsecrated, on whose portal stands a bas-relief of the Annunciation dating back to the year 1000. Inside a wooden crucifix and a silver crown of SS. Maria Annunziata of the eighteenth century. The period of construction dates back to the year 1000, and has been remodeled several times. The current structure dates back to the sixteenth century. Restored in the late nineties. Originally the center was under the control of the Basilian monks of Sant'Elia di Carbone and later passed to the domain of Pedro de Toledo, who had the baronial palace built. A consolidation project was necessary, planned in 1998 and implemented starting from 2001. Once the works were completed, the Baronial Palace became the seat of the Technical Office of the Municipality of Scanzano Jonico (Matera), Basilicata. Scanzano Jonico was a fraction of the Municipality of Montalbano Jonico then in 1974 that agglomeration of houses expanded, increased and became an autonomous municipality.

Disused bridge over the Agri, which can be accessed via single track and which connects Policoro to Scanzano, without going through the SS106. Very helpful!

Borgo San Basilio is the ideal place to spend a truly special holiday. The tourist village spread over 20 hectares along the Marina di Pisticci, one of the most beautiful stretches of the Ionian coast, is inspired by the fishing villages and built with beautiful Mediterranean-style houses. All the structures are well finished and colored, each with a central swimming pool and communal green, where you can choose from many welcoming accommodations: two-roomed, three-roomed, five-roomed, equipped with all comforts. The Village is made up of 7 suburbs with swimming pool and communal greenery for the exclusive use of guests: Suburb of the Oleanders Suburb of the Ginestre Suburb of the Torrette Suburb of the Agora Suburb of the Oranges Suburb of Olives Suburb of the Pond At the center of the village there is a large two-hectare park with paths for strolling where the large Roman Amphitheater stands with 2,500 seats for theatrical performances, musicals and concerts. In the park, in front of the Amphitheater there is a Periptero, a particular conformation of a type of ancient temples surrounded by columns, for the daily animation both in the morning and in the afternoon dedicated to adults and children, also used for the various tournaments of burraco and other outdoor games. There is also a sports center with soccer fields, tennis courts and a playground for the little ones. Outside the Borgo there is a Piazzetta "La Rosa dei Venti" with shops, restaurants, pizzerias, bars-tobacconists, ice cream parlors, a gift and furniture shop and a grocery market.
