The "church of Tissano" probably refers to the Parrocchia di San Martino Vescovo in Tissano, a district of Santa Maria la Longa in the province of Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Construction of the Porta Aquileia began in the mid-14th century and was completed more than a century later. It was part of the fifth and final ring of walls surrounding Udine. The characteristic Ghibelline battlements (swallowtails) immediately catch the eye. Somewhat more difficult to spot are the four stone coats of arms on the exterior (Savorgnan, Patriarchate of Aquileia, Municipality of Udine, and the final, indecipherable one). The four-story tower was the residence of the guard. The fifth ring of walls originally had 13 gates on the main roads leading out of the city: Porta Aquileia and Porta Villalta are the only two remaining gates.

Porta Cividale in Palmanova - along with Porta Aquileia and Porta Udine, each with their early Baroque outworks, is one of three city gates that provide access to the city through the fortified belt with three rings of fortresses. Palmanova itself was founded on October 7, 1593, as a planned city/fortress with a central square and radial street network in the shape of a nine-pointed star. It was the most important land base and served to protect the Republic of Venice from the Turks. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Porta Aquileia, built in the 14th and 15th centuries as part of Udine's last remaining city fortifications, is one of the last remaining entrances to the old town. Today, it houses a cultural institute with a specialized exhibition and library. History & Architecture • The Porta Aquileia was built as part of the fifth and final circuit of Udine's city walls, and was built between approximately the 14th and 15th centuries. • Completed around 1440–1441. • It was one of the original 13 city gates that controlled the main access roads; only the Porta Aquileia and Porta Villalta have survived to this day. • The defensive tower with its characteristic Ghibelline battlements (swallowtail crenellations) is typical. Coat of arms & architectural decoration • On the south side of the tower's facade are four stone coats of arms: those of the city of Udine, the Patriarchate of Aquileia, the Savorgnan family (who oversaw the construction) – and a fourth that can no longer be deciphered.

It's definitely worth a visit. The ditch loop presents no technical or elevation difficulties and is suitable for both mountain bikes and gravel bikes.
