The cathedral of Trani is commonly known as the Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino (its official name would be the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta) and is one of the most beautiful in the area. Construction work on the Romanesque basilica began in 1099 and it was consecrated in 1143.
