Well-preserved castle with panoramic views. Admission to the castle costs money.

A paved path leads into the forest. With hardly any motorized traffic, it's a very enjoyable walk!

Walhalla is the oldest example of a group of monumental memorial buildings in Germany, along with Ludwig's Hall of Liberation, the Niederwald Monument near Rüdesheim am Rhein, the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig, the Kyffhäuser Monument, the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, the Hermann Monument near Detmold, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial at the Porta Westfalica, and the Berlin Victory Column. The architect Leo von Klenze erected the building, intended as a temple of fame, on behalf of King Ludwig I from 1830 to 1842. Its exterior façade was constructed of Untersberg and Kelheim limestone, with the terraced wall originally made of Jurassic limestone from Ebenwies an der Naab, high above the Danube in Donaustauf near Regensburg. Other types of stone were used in the interior, including Carrara marble and Laas marble, as well as limestone from Adnet, Untersberg, Rosenheim, Horwagen and Tegernsee, as well as other types for small decorative elements in the floor.

The castle is really worth a visit. Unfortunately, the castle restaurant in the courtyard is only open from Friday to Sunday. A tour of the castle is also possible, but you should be able to lock your bike.

Unfortunately the small chapel is mostly closed. Beautifully restored chapel.
