The name Civitanuova, which means precisely "new city", was attributed to it to distinguish it from Civitavetula, i.e. the old city, which today is the village of Duronia a few km away from here.

The name of the town originates from the fact that in the period before its foundation there was a fief called "Civitavecchia" or "Civitavetula" (now Duronia). To indicate the more recent foundation of the fief compared to Civitavecchia, the town was called "Civitanova" and the addition of the qualification "del Sannio" was indispensable to distinguish the country from Civitanova Marche. The oldest evidence of the town dates back to the year 1002 when Count Berardo d'Isernia and his wife Gemma wanted to build a monastery dedicated to St. Benedict in the area. Around 1280 the fief was in the possession of Pietro Rodoico. Following the various descendants around 1330, the country was divided into two parts and only in 1360 was its territory unified again by Giovanna d’Evoli with the consent of Queen Giovanna. The feudal lords of the place were the d’Evoli, the Di Sangro, the D’Alessandro, dukes of Pescolanciano, therefore Civitanova del Sannio followed, since 1629, the historical course of the territory that belonged to the feudal lord. The places surrounding the town are pleasant and of a natural beauty that smacks of fabulous and fairytale. Among all, the Karst Lake of San Lorenzo, like the various rocks that make you think of the Dolomites, the beech woods, verdant and very thick, the silent and winding path of the Trigno, the archaeological area "La Civita" invite to excursions to discover the beauties of nature and to breathe healthy air.
