The Apulian Aqueduct cycle path, the section between Cisternino and Villa Castelli

Starting point for hikes in the Pianelle forest. There's a small bar. There's a sign near the fountain: non-potable water. But we always drank it.

This hydroelectric plant was once covered in tall pine trees (and still is today) to prevent it from being bombed during World War II. The area is known as "abbascj alla Centrel," and in the past, many people bathed in the canals built near the plant and running through the countryside; the water was fresh, clear, and drinkable. Unfortunately, the canals are poorly maintained, but this place continues to fascinate tourists and all those who come to visit, upon request, especially in May, if they wish to enter the plant. The Apulian Aqueduct Cycle Route has been open for several years next to the hydroelectric plant. This cycle route allows many bike and nature lovers to pedal, walk, and observe the many wonderful places of the Murgia, the Itria Valley, and Salento.

The origins of the fortress of Taranto date back to Byzantine times. The current appearance of the complex dates back to Ferdinand of Aragon, who had the outdated castle converted into a modern fortress at the end of the 15th century. The fortifications were further reinforced by the Spanish in the 16th century. At the end of the 19th century, the Aragonese Castle passed to the Italian Navy, which still owns the complex today.

Taranto's old town lies on an island between the Mare Piccolo and Mare Grande, connected to the mainland by only two bridges. Many people here still make their living from fishing and the oyster beds of the Mare Piccolo. The sea is present everywhere, even in the paintings of street artists.
