The sheep graze on the dikes in the Altes Land region to help with dike stabilization and maintenance. As they graze, they act as natural lawnmowers, and their hooves compact the soil, strengthening the turf and protecting the dike from erosion. Furthermore, the sheep's hooves fill in mouse holes and mole tunnels, which could otherwise lead to dike undermining during floods. The sheep keep the grass short, promoting deeper and stronger root development. This robust root system protects the dike from the force of the water. Soil compaction: the sheep's hooves firm the soil, stabilizing the dike. The compacted turf prevents erosion, and the sheep actively fill in mouse and mole holes. The sheep provide natural landscape maintenance, serving as a cost-effective alternative to mechanical maintenance and ensuring a uniform, dense turf.

A fantastic hiking and cycling path runs along here, amidst beautiful nature. On one side, sheep graze on the dike, and on the opposite side, the Elbe River flows through apple orchards. Highly recommended.

Roland is a symbol of market peace and the coat of arms and seal of the city of Wedel (Holstein). The Roland statue was probably first erected around 1450 by the sovereign of the County of Pinneberg, the Count of Schauenburg, and served as a symbol of his market justice, customs, warehousing, and ferry rights. The statue was replaced in 1558. The figure is made of solid Bückeburg sandstone and composed of 32 individual parts. It weighs approximately 8 tons. Over the centuries, the figure has been restored several times. To mark its 500th anniversary, the figure was thoroughly restored in 1950 and moved to its current location. Its original location was the center of the market square. The Roland statue was last restored in 2012, for the 800th anniversary of the city of Wedel. The color scheme was restored to its earliest known state. According to legend, Roland was a knight in the service of Emperor Charlemagne, who lived from 747 to 814. There is a covered rest area with two benches, a table and a repair station.

To put it positively, it's a test of courage to continue riding despite the Krückau River occasionally flooding certain paths. Today, July 24, 2025, it went well.

The path on the land side of the dike is mostly free of sheep and is generally of better quality.
