What's the difference between Berchtesgaden and Berchtesgadener Land? Berchtesgadener Land is the entire region in the southeasternmost tip of Bavaria – a district with many special places: Ramsau, Schönau am Königssee, Bad Reichenhall, Bischofswiesen, Marktschellenberg, and Berchtesgaden itself. In short: Berchtesgaden is part of Berchtesgadener Land – but not all of it.

Already on the ascent to the Schapbachalm you have a beautiful view of the Watzmann and its wife.

The Kührointalm is an alpine pasture at the foot of the Watzmann mountain in the Berchtesgaden Alps. It is located in the municipality of Schönau am Königssee, in the Königssee district, directly on the border with the Ramsau district of Ramsauer Forst. The Kührointalm comprises a 3-hectare alpine meadow and is situated in a bowl-shaped, gently undulating terrain that opens to the northeast, partly resembling a hilly meadow. It is state-owned and managed. Annual precipitation is 1500 mm. The Bavarian Avalanche Warning Service operates an automatic measuring station.

Right next to the Kührointhütte, there's a very friendly dairymaid. Ideal for a snack!

Not so crowded, and the food is good. If you don't want to climb so many meters in one day, this is a great place to stay overnight on the way to the Watzmannhaus.

Königssee is a mountain lake located largely within Berchtesgaden National Park. Nestled between the steep slopes of the Watzmann and Hagen Mountains, this elongated lake, along with the smaller Obersee lake to the southeast—around which the Steinernes Meer forms the valley's edge—has a fjord-like character. From the Königssee parking lot, a path leads past picturesque boathouses into the national park. Past the former Café Malerwinkl, the walk leads to the so-called Malerwinkel (Painter's Corner). This hike is also very popular as a winter walk, as the path to Malerwinkl is cleared and gritted during these times.
