The old sugar bowl had a short life. It was built at the end of the 19th century when beetroot cultivation was introduced to the area to reduce dependence on the vine. However, the beets in this area contained less sugar and the sugar plant, not being so profitable, was soon dismantled and its machinery sold to other sugar factories on the peninsula.
