In January 1942, the first Jewish Amsterdammers were taken to the Drenthe labor camps. Until then, the Diever A and Diever B camps near Oude Willem had primarily housed (non-Jewish) unemployed men from the Randstad, but by the end of 1941, they had all left and were mostly sent to work in Germany. The German occupiers considered the vacant labor camps a suitable location to isolate Jewish men from their families and force them to perform hard labor. For example, the men were forced to clear wasteland, build roads, and clear snow from the access roads to the camps, sometimes in temperatures of -20°C. After the war, in 1946, the barracks were demolished and rebuilt in Montfort, Limburg, where they were given a new purpose. The foundations were left behind. During the construction of a bicycle path in 2000, a piece of concrete was found that turned out to be part of those foundations. On October 2, 2002, a memorial was unveiled at this location in memory of all Jews who stayed in Diever A or Diever B, whether for a short or long period of time. The memorial consists of a glass plaque with a poem by Jacqueline van der Waals (1868-1922), entitled "Courage," from her 1922 collection "Last Verses." The memorial stands as a silent witness to the injustice and reminds us never to forget these atrocities. Unfortunately, the text on the glass memorial is illegible.
