Several legends surround the small, almost inconspicuous church of St. John on the Imberg. According to history books, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is said to have regularly climbed the church's approximately 125 steps. The church, dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, has in any case survived for over 700 years. St. John's Church on the Imberg, Salzburg Halfway between Steingasse and the Capuchin Monastery is the oldest church on the right side of Salzburg's Old Town: the listed St. John's Church on the Imberg. What's so special about this church? The name of this small, single-nave church, first documented in 1319, goes back to an old name for the Kapuzinerberg (Imberg). The core of the small church is Romanesque; it was remodeled in the Baroque style in the 17th century. The high altar is still adorned with a painting, much of which dates back to 1681. Salzburg's Historic Center: UNESCO World Heritage Site Only the most outstanding natural and cultural monuments make it onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. In addition to architectural monuments and urban ensembles, the World Heritage also includes cultural landscapes, industrial monuments, and works of art such as petroglyphs. Austria currently has twelve World Heritage sites. By signing the UNESCO Convention of 1993, Austria committed itself to protecting and preserving the World Heritage sites within its borders. The Historic Center of the City of Salzburg has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996/1997. The historic center, which is worthy of protection, covers 236 hectares and contains approximately 1,000 objects. From the opposite bank of the Salzach you have a great view of the fortress and the old town. What's special is sitting in the Monkeys cafe bar cityoasis right on the waterfront, sipping a cocktail and enjoying the view.
