These old windmills are the best proof that people were clever enough a number of centuries ago - long before the discovery of electricity and the inventions that resulted from it - to harness the power of the elements for their own purposes: no human or animal muscle power is needed for the grinding process, but the wind captured by the wings is enough to drive the heavy millstones and thus, for example, to grind flour from grain (grain mills) or to press oil from olives (oil mills). Often they are only technical and historical evidence of a long tradition of craftsmanship, because most of the old mills have been abandoned over time.

This bright white windmill is a surprising sight near the top of Pitch Hill. It's also sometimes known as Hurt Wood Windmill. Built in 1845, it has been converted into a house.

I almost chopped this climb out of my ride at the weekend as I wasn’t feeling particularly spectacular and terms like “the hardest climb in the south east” set an expectation. Have to say, it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. Yes it gets steep towards the end but that part doesn’t last long really. I wouldn’t be concerned doing it again, and that isn’t me being all “I’m great”…just trying to encourage people to have a go. What’s the worst that can happen…?

There is a strong community spirit, which is centred around the Peaslake Village Stores, The Hurtwood Inn and Pedal and Spoke. St Marks’ is part of Shere and Peaslake Church. Services alternate on a Sunday between St Marks’ and St James’ in Shere. Peaslake Village Hall, is an excellent community asset, built in 1923 and regularly used for clubs, social occasions and amateur dramatics.
