The Mettlach barrage was built as part of the expansion of the Saar in 1986. It has a height difference of 11 m, making it the second highest on the Saar after the Serrig barrage at 14.5 m. The barrages on the Saar each have a large lock (190 m usable length, 12 m width, 4 m drempel depth), a small lock (40 m usable length, 6.75 m width, 3 m drempel depth), a weir and a hydroelectric power station with 2 tubular turbines. There is a beautiful cycle path on both sides of the Saar, not paved but easy to cycle. Hans-Peter has the flow direction wrong in his mind (or I misunderstood his statement). The better side is the one on the left side of the Saar, i.e. the larger arch.

The starting point for many beautiful tours

There are some worthwhile locations here. Particularly interesting for porcelain lovers.

The Mettlach barrage is one of eight barrages on the Saar shipping route from Saarbrücken to Konz.

A tranquil place worth seeing on the Saar loop. Embedded in forests and starting point for bike tours along the river and hikes on paths through the countryside. Located on the Saar Cycle Path from Sarreguemines in France to Konz and where the Saar meets the Moselle. Ship tours on the Saar can start at the pier.

The Welles ferry takes you comfortably from the left to the right bank at Dreisbach. From the right bank you have a better view of the Cloef vantage point.
