The Altmühlsee begins here - but here there are two directions (clockwise / counterclockwise).

To be honest, we have been disappointed so far with the Altmühltal cycle path coming from Rothenburg. It is a lot of valley (which doesn't feel like it because it is so many kilometers wide) and almost never along the Altmühl. It is a bit like the Lower Rhine through fields and meadows with lots of gravel areas along the railway line and small hills on the horizon. Let's see what else comes..

Nice little town with plenty of restaurants. The Storchgasstätte right on the bike path is very good.

Beautiful district town with a great old town center, historic buildings, the bell tower, many small shops, ice cream parlors and restaurants. It's worth a visit.
