Hiking on the jungle trail through the moorland forest.

What a great trail, in parts a real path, that leads through the Pfungstadt jungle (that's what I call this path, which I really enjoy walking). A huge tree also blocks the way, but someone has now created a mini path underneath it 👍🏻 great, an experience for children too, but not barrier-free and not suitable for strollers.

Very nice to walk there, effectively mystical atmosphere as everything is quite overgrown. You should be sure-footed and have lots of roots on the trail, which also seems a bit adventurous, and is highly recommended.

There are plenty of parking spaces outside of the bathing season, but during this time the “large” parking lot 🅿️ is always too small 😉

Large parking lot directly at the local recreation area Erlensee

Fallen trees can be found along a path lined with Lesser Balsam, as this part of the forest is no longer managed. If you touch the ripe pods of balsam, they "explode". The "deadwood" of the trees forms the basis of life for a wealth of animal and plant species and thus ensures that the biodiversity of the moor is preserved. Deadwood provides a habitat and forms a habitat for insects in particular thus also the food base for the bird population in the bird sanctuary. The Erlensee was originally a gravel pit. The gravel and sand extracted from the lake was mainly used for the construction of the motorways. After the end of gravel mining, the Erlensee was renatured. Today the lake is used for fish farming and as a leisure area. The Erlensee was named after the alders that grow on its shore.
