The reservoir is primarily used to generate electricity and to equalize the water output by the Biggetalsperre's power station. The hydropower plant with two Kaplan turbines in the natural stone-clad power house has an output of 2.2 megawatts, is used to cover peak loads and produces around 3 million kilowatt hours annually. The power plant is operated by Lister- und Lennekraftwerke GmbH.

The Ahauser Stausee (Ahausen reservoir) is a reservoir in the areas of the city of Attendorn and the municipality of Finnentrop, Olpe district, North Rhine-Westphalia. It was created in 1937/1938 and today belongs to the Ruhr Association. The dam is a 165 m wide earth dam, the maximum water depth is 13 m.
