In 1987, an almost completely preserved forest elephant skeleton was excavated in the former Gröbern opencast mine. The site is on the edge of the Gröberner See and is marked by a sign. The approximately 125,000 year old skeleton can now be seen in the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle.
