The Pöhl dam is the second largest in Saxony in terms of storage space and the third largest in terms of the height of the dam above the foundation and the area of water. The dam is used for flood protection, service water supply, low-water raising, energy production, leisure recreation and as a traffic structure.

Swimming, shipping, sailing, diving and other recreational sports are possible in the reservoir (however, no pleasure craft with combustion engines are permitted), there is a campsite and extensive recreational activities, e.g. B. a climbing park. During the summer months, round trips by passenger ship are offered on the dam. Sailing regattas take place regularly, and many sailing clubs and a diving club are organized around the dam. In the summer season, the main bathing beach (FKK Helmsgrün) is guarded by the lifeguards during the day, regattas and diving competitions are also supervised. A triathlon takes place every year.
