The bridge over the Wöhrsee between Hauptsee and Herzogbad is the only way to cross the Wöhrsee. It was renovated in April 2024. During the construction work, the entire bridge, including the concrete foundations and lock, was dismantled and renewed. The wooden girders were replaced with steel girders so that rotting wood will no longer be a problem in the future.

Whether you are a swimmer or a boater in the warm summer water, an ice skater or curling player on the frozen lake or a walker around the lake: As a leisure paradise, the Wöhrsee guarantees a natural experience with extra-long panoramic views of the castle in every season. There is also a winter bathing area, which is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. this season from October 15, 2024 to March 31, 2025. It is of course closed when there is snow or ice.

The Am Pulverturm cemetery is both a cemetery and a memorial. After the end of the Second World War, American soldiers found 2,249 concentration camp prisoners in the forest camp near Mettenheim, a subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp, who had died as a result of mistreatment, malnutrition, weakness and epidemics. The deceased were reburied in memorial cemeteries in Altötting, Ampfing, Kraiburg am Inn, Mühldorf am Inn, Burghausen and Neumarkt St. Veit. The Nazi regime held Jews from Hungary, Poland and Lithuania in the subcamp. On July 28, 1945, 253 unknown prisoners were buried in Burghausen. On the memorial stone in the cemetery, visitors find the inscription: “Dedicated to the deceased LZ camp inmates by the American military government and the city of Burghausen in 1945”. On September 29, 1945, the American military government officially handed over the cemetery to the city of Burghausen. Today, the Bavarian Memorials Foundation looks after the cemetery. The cemetery is located not far from the powder tower of Burghausen Castle. Those interested can reach the memorial on foot via the Alois-Buchleitner-Weg. https://www.burghausen.de/stadt/orte-des-gedenkens/kz-friedhof-burghausen/

I can only recommend that everyone take the "Secret Paths" tour of the castle. It is very informative, not boring at all, and you get to see rooms, towers and cellars that remain hidden from others. Our castle guide, Mr. Scheuermann, was simply great and took a lot of time. We were lucky enough to have him to ourselves 😉. Thank you again for everything. Here is the information you still need: Secret Paths As part of the "Secret Paths" tour, you will visit the "old" treasury, the shield wall, a cellar in the castle, the Gothic Hall and the St. Elisabeth Chapel, and climb the seven-story keep. When: Saturday + Sunday at 10.30 a.m. + 1 p.m. Duration: around 90 minutes Cost: adults 5 euros, Children and young people up to 18 years: 2 euros Registration required: Castle administration, Telephone 08677 4659 (April to September: daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. October to March: daily from 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) https://www.burg-burghausen.de/deutsch/tour

Just before the historic gate is a mini golf course with a wonderful little beer garden and reasonable prices.
