Wind-protected birdwatching stand for wading birds

Beautiful view, especially at low tide

The Vickers Wellington departed from Moreton-in-Marsh airfield, England, at 18:30 on 26 January 1943. It was a training mission with practice bombs. The crew did not belong to a squadron, but to an Operational Training Unit. The planned route extended to 50 miles off the English coast. The crew probably became disoriented above the North Sea. The plane was shot down by German pilot Leutnant W. Kuthe near Texel. The plane crashed in the Wadden Sea. Two months later, Ellis and Smith washed ashore at Texel. The same happened to Mitchell, Llewelyn and Elvin around Den Helder. Navigator Tucker was apparently only recovered from the wreckage after the war in the summer of 1945. He is buried in the cemetery of Westerland. Morgan was the only survivor. He was wounded and was nursed in the Wilhelmina Hospital in Amsterdam until February 1943.
