The municipality of Arth lies on the southern shore of Lake Zug in a valley between the Rossberg and the Rigi. Its territory extends over an area of 4,858 hectares, a portion of which includes Lake Zug. Approximately 26 percent of the municipal area is covered by cultivated land and approximately 30 percent by forest; the remaining area is used for settlements and transport infrastructure. Early tourist destinations on Mount Rigi included the pilgrimage and spa town of Rigi-Kaltbad, founded in the 17th century, and the pilgrimage destination "Maria zum Schnee" (Our Lady of the Snows) near the mountain chapel on Mount Rigi, from which the spa town of Rigi-Klösterli developed.
