In summer you can choose between stairs, road or elevator. In winter, stairs and road are not recommended due to slipperiness, but the elevator offers a good solution here.

Koli's old Alamaja was located on this site before. It was one of the three first tourist cabins, along with Ylämaja and Mattila farms. Accessibility was ensured by a telephone, which was still a rarity at the time. Alamaja was built in 1911 as a private summer house, but was soon bought by Metsähallitus to use as a lodge for tourists. When the road to Yla-Koli parking lot was completed in 1933, the number of visitors arriving via the harbor gradually decreased. The old Alamaja was abandoned in the 1960s and the new Alamaja was built in 2004 at its current location on the shore of Lake Pielinen. The Sataman Polku trail continues left from this intersection. The path to the right leads to Mattila farm.

Here lies the site of the old Kivelä farm, which was founded in 1750. The current focal point of the estate is the Mattila House, built in the 1920s. Mattila is considered the cradle of culture in Koli and played a key role in the growth of the village. In the late 19th century, locals gathered here to promote the establishment of library activities and to decide to establish a primary school in Koli. The old route from the port to Koli village and up to Ukko-Koli passed close to the farm and therefore Mattila also played a central role in the development of tourism. In the 1920s, Metsähallitus leased the farm, which was developed into suitable accommodation for tourists. Among the guests who stayed at the cozy Mattila was the painter Eero Järnefelt. Mattila still accommodates and hosts tourists today.

The view of the seemingly endless forests is not quite as spectacular as the view in the opposite direction across the lake, but it is still rewarding.
