Located in the enchanting natural reserve of Isola Clodia, the area is home to ancient Roman remains and the remains of the Abbey of San Pancrazio al Fango, built on a Roman villa. The Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, spread over 1,273 hectares between Castiglione della Pescaia and Grosseto, represents the last vestige of the Castiglione Marshes, subjected to reclamation works by the Lorraine family in the eighteenth century. Classified as a "wetland of international importance" according to the Ramsar Convention, it is a key area for Tuscan birdlife.

The Red House, or Fabbrica delle Cateratte, was built in 1765 by the Jesuit mathematician Leonardo Ximenes, to control the flow of water in and out between the swamp and the sea. The structure now houses the Visitor Center of the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve and serves as a starting point for excursions by boat and for the various activities proposed. Here there is also the Interactive Multimedia Museum created by the agency for scientific dissemination Mizar and designed by the well-known physicist Paco Lanciano.
